It was held by Kyiv Mohyla Academy together with "United World" International Foundation
10 years ago the Faculty of Legal Sciences of National Kyiv Mohyla Academy has established the contest for smart students. Its slogan was a phrase of well-known Roman jurist Ulpian Domitius (170 - 228) "Scientia juris dignissima est" - Knowledge of the law deserves the highest respect. The purpose of the contest is to motivate students to improve their professional skills, to deepen their knowledge and to grow up intellectual elite as creative potential for today and for the future of Ukrainian society.
On December 8, 2011, the VIIth contest was held. Nine teams of law students struggled for the title of the smartest ones. Nataliya Artikutsa, the head of the Centre for innovative methods of legal education, associate professor of international law and specific legal sciences, was the organizer and initiator of the event. She believes that competition of this kind can not only help future lawyers to enrich their professional vocabulary, to improve professional erudition, but also to form important need to improve and express their personality in cognitive-intellectual activity and instill a love of knowledge, science, and the legal profession.
The experience confirms that the competition will intensify students, motivate them to enhance professional knowledge and understand that the winner is the one who knows more. “Such contests manage to lay the foundation of intellectual and cultural capital of each individual. We, the teachers and professors, should teach more creative, interesting, and implement new methods and forms of teaching”, she said.
Contest questions and tasks covered different sectors of the domestic and foreign law, history and present state of law development, especially in concern of Ukraine. Each team had also prepared a set for opposing teams.
During the presentations, each team was quick-minded, smart and showed vivid sense of humor that is so inherent in the student body.
The results of “terminology and legal battles” are the following:
1 place went to “Girls in law” team: Catherine Culina (captain), Lily Bernatskaya, Christina Korpan, Natalia Kulik, Roman Marchuk, Olga Pavlova, Maria Rudko, Catherine Yashchenko;
2 place went to “KTP” (Knowledge of terminology is presumed) team: Anna Shcherbak (captain), Valentine Avramich, Olesya Boychuk, Olga Grinko, Martha Zakharko, Oksana Kochkodan, Julia Pristash, Victoria Sidorenko;
3 place went to “People-UT”: Svetlana Pavlichenko (captain), Lubov Boyarkina-Bilan, Katherine Vygovskaya, Maryam Dadashov, Anna Kolesnik, Mary Lysenko, Elizabeth Middle, Elina Yakovlev.
The “best presentation” prize winner is “Safe sense” team: Anna Vlasenko (captain), Ivan Young Master, Bogdan Dyakovich, Ignat Zabrodsky, Olesya Mikhailenko, Nick Rassadina, Elena Serpuhovitina.
The winners were also awarded with presents, provided by “United World” International Foundation on behalf of Eduard Prutnik, the Chairman of the Board. Victoria Maksimovs’ka, the Foundation’s press-officer, presented books, issued by the Foundation and said greeting words on behalf of Mr.Prutnik.
“Students are the most energetic and vital part of our society. Years of studying are interesting, funny and at the same time a very important stage in the life as they are the basis of future professional and life success. I wish you to stay afloat in a sea of knowledge, discovery and capabilities. Go on, enjoy your lives - full and joyful, create, become generators of new ideas and initiatives”, she said.
